How do I use the equation editor feature?

The Equation Editor allows you to add properly formatted mathematical equations, symbols, fractions, exponents, and other mathematical notation to CourseArc content. Use the Equation Editor when creating math, science, or other content that requires mathematical expressions. Using the Equation Editor ensures accessibility for learners.

Equations can be added directly within supported CourseArc blocks and glossary definitions.

Note: To use the Equation Editor, you must have the Equation Editor role assigned to your CourseArc user account. Contact your CourseArc System Administrator to request this role.

Blocks that Support the Equation Editor

The Equation Editor is available in the following blocks:

• Cloze
• Content
• Icon and Link to Popup Text
• Icon and Text
• Image
• Image Hotspots
• Instructor Notes
• Quiz (Question Prompt question type only)
• Quote
• Standout
• Tabs and Accordions
• Writing

Add an Equation to a Block

1. Add or edit a block that supports equations.
2. Place your cursor where you want to insert the equation.
3. Select the Equation Editor button in the toolbar.
   
   
4. The MathType equation editor opens as a pop-up window. Use the toolbar buttons to insert symbols and select number formats, such as fractions or exponents. Use the keyboard to enter numbers and variables.
   
   
5. For example, to enter f(x)=abˣ:
   • Enter f using your keyboard.
   • Select the Parentheses icon.
   • Enter x and =a using your keyboard.
   • Select the Exponent icon.
   • Enter b as the base.
   • Use the Up or Right Arrow key to move the cursor to the exponent field.
   • Enter x using your keyboard.
   • When the equation is complete, select OK.
     
     
6. The equation will appear in the block. Note: For additional information about formatting equations, refer to this WIRIS documentation. To make edits to an equation, double-click the equation to open the Equation Editor with that equation, make edits, then select OK when finished.
   
   
   
7. Select the Add Block+ button to save the block to the page. The new block will appear on the page in Edit Mode with a red, dotted outline indicating it's editable. It may not look correct in Edit Mode because the page has not yet rendered.
   
   
8. Select the Publish My Edits button to save the block to the course page and see the content as it will appear to learners.
   

Add Equations to Glossary Definitions

The Equation Editor can also be used when creating glossary terms.

For Global and Course Glossaries, the Equation Editor is available in a term's Long Definition:* field.
