CourseArc has two options for displaying math equations: MathJax and WIRIS.
If the equation editor is enabled for the CourseArc installation, an equation rendering setting is visible in the system-wide General Settings (Dashboard\Settings\General Settings).
Note: If ReadSpeaker is enabled for the site, MathJax is recommended as the system-wide general settings default and wherever possible.
The default equation rendering preference is set at the system level (General Settings), but the system setting can be overridden by specifying the equation rendering method at the module or page level. When rendering an equation on a course page, CourseArc looks at the equation rendering settings in the following order—page setting, module setting, and General Settings—and applies the first setting that is configured.
Configuring an equation rendering option at the module or page level can be useful when the content will be shared with other organizations and requires a specific renderer to display properly.
In these two examples, the Equation Rendering: is set to Default. If the page Non-Text Elements is part of the Systems of Equations module, then equations will be rendered according to the General Settings equation rendering.
When using LaTeX to add a math equation directly to a content block, MathJax is recommended for the rendering option for that page or module.
WIRIS is recommended for the rendering option for a page or module when equations contain any of the following: stacked addition, subtraction, multiplication, long division, integrals, or summation.
If an "undefined" or "unknown node type" message appears where an equation was located when the page is published, changing to the other rendering option for the page will often resolve the issue.
Switching the rendering option often resolves unknown node type errors
